Covid-19 and Recovery

Covid-19 arrived in the Western Hemisphere in late February 2020. I tried to imagine it away but it didn't go, it spread. Canadians were asked to return home from wherever they were in the world, so we did. We left Guana Cay on March 20th and returned to our home in Ottawa. We thought we would be back by the end of August. WRONG! We have just celebrated our Canadian Thanksgiving and have been unable to return yet.

The pandemic has changed our world and has hindered recovery in the Abacos. The economic impact is terrible throughout the world but in a small community only beginning to find it's legs after absolute destruction? Well, it's not good.

I write this from the comfort of my home in Canada. I have had the luxury of food security, great healthcare, the support of our government in terms of a safety net for those who need it and basically my great inconvenience has been to learn social distancing, mask wearing and hand sanitizing. Imagine that on an island or cay without food or shelter security, limited healthcare access, no electrical power other than a generator and dwindling employment? During another hurricane season!! My heart goes out to these people. It was tough and a pandemic just makes life hellacious!

I truly hope our world leaders can get this right and that we can have some sort of vaccine in place as soon as possible. There is only so much a small community like Abaco can endure. The Bahamas needs this to end!
